Yesterday we were less productive than I expected. Well we were productive but on a different way. We started making the preparations for the Dovetail crossed lap connection. I just started the first kerf when the teacher came to ask if we had taken our chisels. Ofcourse we did.
How to grind our old chisels was on the program today. After explained how to work with both, the bench grinder as the wet grinder, I soon realized that I prefer to work with the wet grinder. With the wet grinder it is almost impossible to burn the tip. What happened to me quickly with the bench grinder.
I wass so told: don't press to hard or your chisel will burn. And yes I did it. It is a lot of work to get rid of the burned tip.
After that it was time for the dirty work. Working with the sharpening (whet) stone.
I only had time to do the back of the first chisel. Next class we will do some more sharpening I presume.
![]() | The chisel that is up to the back is the one I have already whetted. It is also clear to see which chisels I tried to sharpen the blund tips of with the bench grinder. |
The skills learned last week I tried out by making it in a one-inch scale version. | ![]() |
I learned that getting your old chisel ready for work takes time. When ready chisels are an extremely useful woodworking tool.
